Job Summary: Director of Finance is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing all accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, internal controls, and audit functions of the organization. This position provides strategic financial leadership in support of the organization's mission as a nonprofit behavioral health provider, ensuring financial integrity, regulatory compliance, and operational effectiveness. It functions as the chief steward of the Accounting Department and serves as a key partner to the CFO, executive leadership, and program directors.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Reporting & Close
- Direct the preparation, review, and timely distribution of monthly and annual financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets, cash flow statements, and supporting schedules.
- Oversee the monthly close process, including review of journal entries, reconciliations, allocations, and variance analysis.
- Ensure financial reports are accurate, complete, and prepared in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards.
Budgeting & Financial Planning
- Lead the annual operating, capital, and cash flow budgeting processes in collaboration with the CFO, executive leadership, and department directors.
- Monitor budget-to-actual performance, identify trends and variances, and provide clear financial analysis and recommendations to leadership.
- Support long-range financial planning, forecasting, and scenario modeling to ensure organizational sustainability.
Audit, Tax & Regulatory Compliance
- Coordinate and lead the annual independent financial audit, acting as primary liaison with external auditors and ensuring timely completion with minimal audit adjustments.
- Oversee preparation and review of annual tax filings and required regulatory reports.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local financial regulations, grant requirements, and nonprofit reporting standards, including 2 CFR 200 where applicable.
Internal Controls & Policies
- Develop, maintain, and enforce accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls to safeguard organizational assets and ensure fiscal integrity.
- Ensure Accounting Department practices align with approved organizational policies and procedures.
- Support continuous improvement of financial workflows, documentation, and control environments.
Department Leadership & Staff Management
- Supervise and mentor Accounting Department staff, including the AP Specialist, Grant Specialist, Payroll Coordinator, and Staff Accountants.
- Establish clear performance expectations, provide coaching and feedback, and support professional development and cross-training.
- Ensure appropriate staffing levels, segregation of duties, and coverage for critical accounting functions.
- Lead the department in projects include potential systems migrations, efficiency initiatives, and other value-producing efforts.
Treasury, Cash & Banking
- Partner with the CFO to oversee banking, treasury, and cash management activities, including monitoring liquidity and working capital.
- Monitor cash flow and advise leadership of material risks or opportunities.
Program, Grant & Operational Support
- Support program directors and operational leaders in understanding financial results, grant performance, and budgetary implications.
- Oversee grant accounting, ensuring revenues and expenses are properly recorded, monitored, and reported.
- Provide financial analysis for contracts, service line performance, pricing decisions, and operational initiatives.
Executive Support
- Prepare and present financial information, narratives, and analyses for executive leadership.
- Serve as a trusted financial advisor to the CFO and executive team, contributing to organization-wide strategic decision-making.
Qualifications:
Required
- Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Accounting or Finance.
- 5 to 7 years of progressive accounting or finance experience, including supervisory responsibility of teams larger than 5 staff.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards.
- Demonstrated experience with budgeting, financial reporting, audits, and internal controls.
- Experience with fund accounting platforms and MS365 Ecosystem including Teams, SharePoint, and Copilot.
- Clear/Active FL Driver's License
- Staying compliant on all trainings and immunizations = Required
- Ability to pass Level II DCF Mental Health Fingerprinting (General Information can be found HERE), Drug Screen and Local Criminal Check
Strongly Preferred
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or equivalent professional certification.
- Experience in nonprofit healthcare or behavioral health environments.
- Experience with grant accounting and government funding compliance.
- Working knowledge of data management, operational systems, and systems best practices.
- Enthusiasm for software and technology/fintech advancement.
- Experience with NetSuite, Power BI, and advanced Excel
- Professional competencies in strategic/analytical thinking, high attention to detail/accuracy, leadership/staff development, clear written/verbal communication, ability to translate complex financial information for non-financial stakeholders, and strong ethics/confidentiality/integrity.
Physical Requirements: This position requires a mix of physical activities throughout the workday. Duties involve periods of standing, sitting, and walking, often across various areas of the site. The role also includes tasks that may require bending, reaching, and other physical movements. Candidates must be able to occasionally lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds. A reasonable level of physical stamina and mobility is necessary to successfully perform the essential functions of this role.
