Salary: Non-Exempt. $19-$24 per hour
Schedule: Sunday - Thursday 8am -4pm
Reports to: Practice Manager

Position Summary:
The Financial Counselor in the Crisis Unit is responsible for providing
financial guidance and support to patients and their families navigating mental
health and substance use crises. The role involves working closely with
patients, care providers, and insurance companies to assess financial
obligations, explain treatment costs, and help patients explore funding
options. The counselor ensures that patients understand their financial
responsibilities while also offering compassionate support during what is often
a high-stress situation.
Key Responsibilities:
- Patient
Financial Assessment:
- Meet with
patients and families to assess their financial situation.
- Provide a
clear explanation of costs related to mental health and substance use
treatments.
- Review and
verify insurance coverage, including copayments, deductibles, and
out-of-pocket expenses.
- Financial
Assistance:
- Assist
patients in applying for sliding scale programs.
- Identify
alternative funding sources, such as state, federal, or community
assistance programs.
- Insurance
Liaison:
- Collaborate
with insurance companies to verify coverage and resolve billing issues.
- Obtain
pre-authorizations and ensure that all treatments are properly documented
for insurance claims.
- Crisis Support:
- Provide
empathetic support and financial counseling in a manner sensitive to the
emotional and mental health needs of patients and their families.
- Help reduce
financial stress by providing clear communication and assistance during
the crisis period
- Documentation:
- Maintain
detailed records of patient insurance verifications, and payment
agreements
- Ensure
confidentiality of patient financial information in compliance with HIPAA
and other regulatory standards
Qualifications:
- Education:
- High School
Diploma or equivalent= required
- Associate's or
Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field=preferred
- Experience:
- Minimum of 2
years of experience in a healthcare setting, preferably in financial
counseling or billing=Required
- Experience
working with mental health or substance use treatment centers is a plus=Preferred
- Skills:
- Strong
understanding of, insurance processes, and financial assistance programs
- Excellent
communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain
complex financial concepts clearly and compassionately
- Ability to
handle sensitive financial information with discretion and
professionalism
- Microsoft
