Position Summary:
The Peer Specialist provides recovery-oriented support and advocacy to individuals with substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders. This role involves engaging clients both in the community hospital setting and within the substance use treatment program, using lived experience to inspire hope, promote recovery, and support individuals in achieving their personal goals.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide peer support to individuals admitted to the community hospital with substance use-related issues.
- Assist clients in identifying strengths, setting recovery goals, and navigating challenges in early recovery.
- Offer emotional support and encouragement during hospital stays and after discharge.
- Meet with patients during hospitalization and continue support as they transition to outpatient or residential substance use treatment programs.
- Collaborate with discharge planners, case managers, and clinical teams to ensure warm handoffs to the next level of care.
- Serve as a role model of recovery and wellness.
- Advocate for client needs and preferences within the healthcare and substance use treatment systems.
- Promote self-advocacy, empowerment, and personal responsibility in recovery.
- Work closely with clinical and medical teams at the hospital and treatment program to support holistic, person-centered care.
- Participate in team meetings, trainings, and case reviews to provide a peer perspective.
- Maintain timely and accurate documentation of peer services provided.
- Communicate effectively with multidisciplinary teams while maintaining client confidentiality and ethical boundaries.
- Documentation & Communication:
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED=required
- Lived experience with substance use and sustained recovery with 1-2 years of continuous recovery=Required
- Personal lived experience with substance use recovery and at least one year in stable recovery.
- Certified Peer Specialist or Recovery Coach preferred (or willingness to obtain certification within 1 year of employment=Required
- Experience working with individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders is a plus.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
- Knowledge of local community resources, recovery support systems, and harm reduction practices.
Work Environment:
- Travel between community hospital and treatment program sites required.
- A flexible schedule may include some evenings or weekends.
