Position Summary:
The Peer Specialist provides support services to individuals, families, and groups by sharing lived experience with mental health and/or substance use recovery. This role promotes wellness, empowerment, and recovery-focused goals for teens and young adults (ages approximately 13-25). Peer Specialists serve as a positive role model, advocate, and mentor while working closely with individuals, their families, and treatment teams.
Key Responsibilities:
- Use lived experience with mental health and/or substance use recovery to build trusting relationships and support others in their own recovery journey.
- Facilitate individual and group peer support sessions focused on life skills, coping strategies, recovery planning, and wellness tools.
- Engage with youth and young adults in a culturally sensitive and age-appropriate manner to foster resilience and hope.
- Support individuals in developing goals related to education, employment, housing, and relationships.
- Provide advocacy and mentorship to clients navigating behavioral health services and systems.
- Work collaboratively with clinical teams and family members to ensure continuity of care and shared decision-making.
- Promote community integration, self-determination, and independence.
- Participate in team meetings, trainings, and supervision as required.
Qualifications:
- Lived experience with mental health and/or substance use recovery, with a willingness to share appropriately in a professional setting.
- Peer Specialist Certification (or willingness to obtain within specified time).
- Experience working or volunteering with youth or young adults preferred.
- Strong communication, boundary-setting, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- High school diploma or GED required; additional training or education in human services a plus.
Physical Requirements:
This position requires a mix of physical activities throughout the workday. Duties involve periods of standing, sitting, and walking, often across various areas of the site. The role also includes tasks that may require bending, reaching, and other physical movements. Candidates must be able to occasionally lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds. A reasonable level of physical stamina and mobility is necessary to successfully perform the essential functions of this role.
