Position Summary:
The Peer Specialist provides recovery-oriented support and advocacy to individuals with mental health and substance use disorders. This role involves engaging clients in the Adult Mental Health Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) using lived experience to inspire hope, promote recovery, and support individuals in achieving their personal goals.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide peer support to individuals admitted to the PHP with mental health and substance use related issues.
- Assist clients in identifying strengths, setting recovery goals, and navigating challenges in early recovery.
- Offer emotional support and encouragement.
- Collaborate with discharge planners, case managers, and clinical teams to ensure warm handoffs to the next level of care.
- Serve as a role model of recovery and wellness.
- Advocate for client needs and preferences within the mental health and substance use treatment systems.
- Promote self-advocacy, empowerment, and personal responsibility in recovery.
- Work closely with the clinical treatment team to support holistic, person-centered care.
- Participate in team meetings, trainings, and case reviews to provide a peer perspective.
- Maintain timely and accurate documentation of peer services provided.
- Communicate effectively with multidisciplinary teams while maintaining client confidentiality and ethical boundaries.
- Documentation & Communication:
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED = Required.
- Lived experience with mental health or substance use and sustained recovery with
1-2 years of continuous recovery = Required.
- Certified Peer Specialist or Recovery Coach preferred (or willingness to obtain certification within 6 months).
- Experience working with individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders is a plus.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
- Knowledge of local community resources, recovery support systems, and harm reduction practices.
Work Environment:
- Monday-Friday (8 hour shift - Daytime hours)
Physical Requirements:
This position requires a mix of physical activities throughout the workday. Duties involve periods of standing, sitting, and walking, often across various areas of the site. The role also includes tasks that may require bending, reaching, and other physical movements. Candidates must be able to occasionally lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds. A reasonable level of physical stamina and mobility is necessary to successfully perform the essential functions of this role.?
