Position Summary

The Peer Specialist provides recovery-oriented support and advocacy to individuals with mental health and substance use disorders. This role engages clients in the Adult Mental Health Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) by using lived experience to inspire hope, support recovery, and assist individuals in achieving personal goals.

Key Responsibilities

Engagement & Support

  • Provide peer support to individuals admitted to the PHP with mental health and/or substance use concerns.
  • Assist clients in identifying strengths, setting recovery goals, and addressing challenges in early recovery.
  • Offer emotional support, encouragement, and guidance.
  • Collaborate with discharge planners, case managers, and clinical staff to ensure seamless transitions to the next level of care.

Advocacy & Empowerment

  • Serve as a role model for recovery and wellness.
  • Advocate for client needs and preferences within treatment systems.
  • Promote self-advocacy, empowerment, and personal responsibility in recovery.

Program Collaboration

  • Work collaboratively with the clinical treatment team to support holistic, person-centered care.
  • Participate in team meetings, trainings, and case reviews, offering a peer perspective.

Documentation & Communication

  • Maintain timely, accurate documentation of peer services.
  • Communicate effectively with multidisciplinary teams while upholding confidentiality and ethical boundaries.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED — Required
  • Lived experience with mental health and/or substance use and 1–2 years of sustained recovery — Required
  • Certified Peer Specialist or Recovery Coach — Preferred (or willingness to obtain within 6 months)
  • Experience working with individuals with co-occurring disorders — Preferred
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Knowledge of community resources, recovery supports, and harm-reduction practices
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 (including Teams/Video Conferencing) and Electronic Medical Records — Strongly Preferred
  • Compliance with required trainings and immunizations — Required
  • Ability to pass Level II DCF Mental Health Fingerprinting (General Information can be found HERE), Drug Screen and Local Criminal Check = Required

Physical Requirements:

  • This position requires a mix of physical activities throughout the workday. Duties involve periods of standing, sitting, and walking, often across various areas of the site. The role also includes tasks that may require bending, reaching, and other physical movements. Candidates must be able to occasionally lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds. A reasonable level of physical stamina and mobility is necessary to successfully perform the essential functions of this role.
